Streaming to productivity. How can music improve work performance?

Bob Marley once said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” We’ve all been there. You’re jamming out to your favorite tune, and you are immediately moved to a happier place. If it’s an older song, you may even have an associated memory or even a smell that you recall. As a property manager you would love to be able to keep your tenants in their happy places. Studies have shown when you hear a song you like that the brain releases dopamine, a chemical that has a positive effect on mood. A great tune can also reduce stress or anxiety and improve memory.

Are we suggesting you pump music to every office building? Maybe, maybe not. It depends on your property and how it’s set up. Plus, piped in music can end up being costly with the associated licensing fees. However, music is still a great amenity in common areas. There are some newer and more “techy” ways you can get music to your tenants. Here are some cost-saving and effective ways to incorporate music into the workplace.

During Covid-19 a great number of people had to transition to working from home. DJ Jazzy Jeff (DJ and music producer - you may know him from his role as Jazz on the TV show “Fresh Prince of Belair”) was inspired to help those who were struggling with that transition. He launched the “Magnificent Lunch Break”, a virtual musical experience designed to connect people. He produced a new episode every Wednesday as a mid-week break. While he’s wrapped those episodes up, you can still share his YouTube channel with tenant contacts so employees can listen to classic hiphop and R&B, include links to older performances, or search on YouTube for other genres of music.

Streaming services like Spotify make it very easy to create different playlists to share with others. For example, you can create a Christmas playlist to send to your tenants. You can also invite your tenants to share playlists with you or make suggestions. Maybe have some fun and engage them with a Battle of the Playlists. Offer a genre or specific type of music to see which tenant comes up with the best ideas. Who can create the best 90s R&B playlist? What are the best 80s tunes? Best off-beat Christmas songs? The possibilities are endless for something fun!

Studies have shown that music can have a positive effect on people’s moods which leads to increased productivity. Being able to offer music options to your tenants using the methods we described above is quick, inexpensive, and helpful. It gives people the opportunity to listen to new music, to contribute socially, and share their interests. If MOBLZ can help you implement this idea or other amenities that would bring a little joy to your tenants, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
